Prologue

When one window closes, another opens

"So...you want me to do it?" Edward Erlic asked through the telephone from a restraunt called Big Meal. He hadn't slept all night, despite how comfortable the bed was, so he felt tired and cranky inside. He rubbed his eyes, muttering angrily, "You want me to do something when I'm already doing something else?!"

"Well, of course," the colonel replied casually. "This is a very important mission. It would be difficult."

"Difficult!?" Edward nearly screamed. Several people stared at him, startled by his sudden outburst. Uncomfortablely, well aware of the eyes drilling in his mind, he continued, "How can getting this girl to join the military be difficult?"

"She rejected the offer."

Edward snorted. "Well, it's her choice. If she doesn't want to join she doesn't have to. Everyone has the freedom of choosing a path they want to lead."

That was correct. But choosing a path is a heavy risk to take. He and his younger brother, Alphonse Elric, learned that lesson the hard way. With their father gone and their mother deceased, they tried to bring her back from the dead with alchemy...in result, Edward lost his left leg and Alphonse lost his whole body. Terrified and in pain, Edward sacraficed his right arm and brought his soul back in a suit of armor.

Afterwards, Pinako Rockbell and his childhood friend Winry disigned automail for his missing limbs. Then, he and Alphonse joined the military in hopes of finding the Philosopher's Stone and restoring their original bodies.

The colonel sighed. "You're still looking for it, aren't you?"

Edward hesitated slightly as he mumbled, "Well..." He shrugged his shoulders. "I guess so..."

"There is no need to search for it any longer."

Anger boiled deep inside of him. He started twitching uncontrolabely."Are you saying that getting my brother's body back isn't important?" he yelled. "Well, let me tell you something, Roy! It's important to me! Why the hell would I ingore that fact!?"

"This is important to me," Roy couldn't help but to raise his voice. "Of course I know you need to bring your brother's body back, but this is really urgent!"

Alphonse hated when his big brother took most of the burden on his shoulders, when it was obviously suppose to be shared equally among them. He knew Edward didn't want to make him feel the guilt, but it seemed so unfair. It felt unfair when Edward started the fight that they were having right now...

"How urgent is it?"

"It's urgent because...she has the Philosoper's Stone!"

Edward's eyes widened, his mouth went dry and he blinked in astonishment. He tried to speak but he couldn't make a sound.

"Hello!!! Are you there?!" Roy was irritated at the fact that he had not answered to his reply.

"S-she has it?..." Edward finally made out.

"Yes yes, thats what I sa-- Hey! Hello?! Are you there?! Fullmetal!!!" The phone made a beeping sound as Roy continued to yell at it. When he finally stopped screaming at the poor phone he sighed.

"Stupid..." he said under his breath. But the more he thought about it a smille couldn't help but to pierce through his stubborn lips.

"Maria..."
